Job replied: “Today too I complain bitterly, for his hand makes my groaning heavier. If only I knew how to find him, how to reach his tribunal! I would present my case before him, my mouth full of arguments. I would know with what words he would answer me and understand what he says to me. Would he contend with me, making a display of his strength? Then I would argue my case honestly before him and win my cause once and for all. But I turn to the east, and he is not there; to the west, and I cannot perceive him. To the north, where he is at work, and I cannot find him; he hides himself in the south, and I cannot see him. Yet since he knows my conduct, let him examine me, and I shall come forth like gold. My feet followed in his footsteps; I kept to his path without turning aside. I did not depart from his commands, and I treasured his words in my heart. But he does not change: who can dissuade him? Whatever he desires, he carries out. He will execute the sentence appointed for me and many other things he has planned. That is why I am terrified in his presence; the very thought of him fills me with fear. For God has intimidated me; the Almighty has filled me with terror. If only I could vanish into the darkness and deep gloom would veil my face!” |
