Job replied: “I have heard a thousand speeches like these already; you are all troublesome comforters. Is there no end to empty speeches? What drives you to answer back? Would I speak as you do if you were in my place? Would I string words together against you, shaking my head at you? Would I comfort you with my mouth? Or would compassion restrain my lips? Yet even if I speak, my pain does not cease; and if I remain silent, it does not leave me. At last it has overcome me. You silence my testimony and harass me; my suffering rises as a witness against me and accuses me to my face. The fury of God attacks and tears me apart; he gnashes his teeth at me and fixes his hostile eyes upon me. They open their mouths against me, strike me contemptuously on the cheek and gather together against me. God delivers me to the wicked and casts me into the hands of criminals. I was living in peace when he crushed me; he seized me by the neck and tore me to pieces, making me his target. His archers surrounded me; without mercy he pierced my kidneys and poured my gall upon the ground. He broke through my flesh, breach upon breach, and charged at me like a warrior. I have sewn sackcloth over my skin and buried my dignity in the dust. My face is red from weeping, and deep shadow covers my eyelids, although there is no violence in my hands and my prayer is sincere. O earth, do not cover my blood! And now, if my witness is in heaven and my defender is on high, —while my friends mock me and I must weep before God—let him judge between a man and God, between a man and his friend; for a few short years will pass, and I shall set out on the journey from which there is no return.” |
