Bildad of Shuh then spoke and said: “How long will you go on hunting for words? Think first, and then we shall speak. Why do you consider us beasts and regard us as fools? You who tear yourself apart in your anger, must the earth be deserted for your sake, or a rock be moved from its place? The light of the wicked is extinguished, and the flame of his hearth no longer shines. The light in his tent grows dark, and his lamp goes out. His vigorous steps are shortened, and his own plans bring him down. His feet carry him into the net, and he walks among its meshes. A snare catches him by the ankles, and the grave closes over him. Snares lie hidden on the ground and traps along his path. Terrors surround and frighten him; they pursue him at every step. His strength wastes away, and disaster clings to his side. Disease feeds upon his skin and devours his limbs. He is torn from the security of his tent and led before the King of Terrors. His tent is set on fire, and sulphur is scattered over his possessions. Beneath him his roots dry up, and above him his branches wither. The memory of him disappears from the land, and his name is forgotten all around. He is driven from light into darkness and banished from the world. He has neither offspring nor descendants among his people, nor any survivor in his territory. Those in the west are appalled at his fate, and those in the east are seized with horror. Such is the dwelling of the wicked, the place of one who does not acknowledge God!” |
