Description:

I am weary of life: I will give myself over to complaint and pour out the bitterness of my soul.

I will say to God: “Do not condemn me; let me know what you have against me.

Does it seem right to you to oppress me and despise the work of your hands while favouring the designs of the wicked?

Do you have eyes of flesh, or do you see as men see?

Are your days like those of a mortal and your years like those of a man, that you should investigate my guilt and examine my sin, even though you know that I am not guilty and that no one can deliver me from your hands?

Your hands formed me; they shaped my whole being, and now you destroy me?

Remember that you made me from clay; will you now return me to dust?

Did you not pour me out like milk and curdle me like cheese? Did you not clothe me with flesh and skin and weave me together with bones and sinews? Did you not grant me life and favour, and did your providence not guard my spirit?

And yet you kept something hidden within you. Now I know that this was what you intended: that if I sinned, you would watch me and would not leave me unpunished; that if I were guilty, woe to me! And if I were innocent, I still could not lift my head, filled with disgrace and overwhelmed by misery. If I raised it, you would hunt me like a lion, displaying your mighty deeds against me once again, renewing your attacks against me, redoubling your anger against me and sending fresh troops upon me.

Why, then, did you bring me out of the womb?

I could have died without any eye ever seeing me and been as though I had never existed, carried from the womb to the grave. How few my days are!

Let God leave me and turn away from me, so that I may have a moment of joy before I depart, never to return, for the land of darkness and shadow, the land of gloom and obscurity, of confusion and blackness, where even the light itself is shadow.”
