Description:

My mind is troubled, my days are fading, and the grave awaits me. Only mockery keeps me company, and I am weary of provocation.

Appoint a guarantor for me before yourself; who else will stand surety for me?

You have closed their minds to reason, and so they will not prevail.

(“If anyone denounces his neighbour in order to despoil him, the eyes of his children will waste away.”)

He has made me the laughing-stock of the people, like one who is spat upon in the face. My eyes waste away with grief, and all my limbs are like shadows.

The righteous are astonished at the sight, and the innocent are indignant against the wicked; yet the righteous hold firmly to their way, and those whose hands are pure grow stronger.

Come, all of you, return! I shall not find a wise man among you.

My days pass away, my plans fail, as do the desires of my heart: that night might turn into day and the present darkness into approaching light.

I expect nothing! The Abyss is my home; I make my bed in the darkness. I call decay my mother, and the worms my father and my brothers.

Where, then, is my hope? My hope—who has seen it?

It will descend to the gates of the Abyss when together we sink into the earth.
