One day the angels came and presented themselves before the Lord; Satan also came among them. The Lord asked him: –Where have you come from? He replied: –From roaming throughout the earth. The Lord said to him: –Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on earth: he is a just and upright man, God-fearing and far from evil. And you have incited me against him, to destroy him without cause; yet he still holds fast to his integrity. Satan replied: –Skin for skin! A man will give everything he has for his life. Lay your hand upon him, strike his flesh and bones, and I wager that he will curse you to your face. The Lord said to him: –Do whatever you wish with him, but spare his life. And Satan departed. He afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself with as he sat among the ashes. His wife said to him: –Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die. He replied: –You speak like a foolish woman. If we accept good things from God, should we not also accept evil? Despite everything, Job did not sin with his lips. Job's Friends Three of his friends –Eliphaz of Teman, Bildad of Shuh, and Zophar of Naamah– heard of the misfortune that had befallen him. They set out from their respective homes and met together to go and share his grief and comfort him. When they saw him from a distance, they could not recognize him and burst into tears. They tore their robes, threw dust into the air over their heads, and remained with him, sitting on the ground for seven days and seven nights, without saying a word to him, for they saw how terrible his suffering was. |
