Zophar of Naamah then spoke and said: Will all this talk go unanswered? Is the chatterer to be proved right? Will your torrent of words silence others? Will you mock without anyone putting you to shame? You have said: “My teaching is pure; I am blameless in your sight.” But if only God would speak to you and open his lips to answer you. He would reveal to you the secrets of wisdom, its profound insights, and you would know that he even forgives part of your guilt. Do you intend to fathom God or comprehend the perfection of the Almighty? It is higher than heaven—what can you do? It is deeper than the abyss—what can you know? It is longer than the earth and broader than the sea. If he comes and imprisons someone and summons him to judgement, who can prevent him? He knows false men; when he sees wickedness, will he not take notice? But a fool will gain understanding when a wild donkey is born a tame colt. If your heart is steadfast, stretch out your hands towards him. If there is wickedness in your hand, cast it away, and let no injustice dwell in your tent. Then you will be able to lift your head without blemish; though beset, you will feel no fear. You will forget your misfortunes or remember them only as water that has flowed away. Your life will rise brighter than midday; your darkness will become like the dawn. You will find peace because there is hope; you will lie down and rest in safety. You will lie down with no one to frighten you, and many will seek your favour. But the eyes of the wicked will fail; they will find no way of escape, and their hope will be no more than a breath. |
