Description:

Job replied:

“How long will you continue to afflict me and crush me with your words?

Ten times already you have put me to shame and insulted me without restraint. And if I have indeed committed an error, that error remains with me.

Do you wish to triumph over me by throwing my disgrace in my face?

Then know that it is God who has overwhelmed me and entangled me in his nets.

I cry, ‘Violence!’ but no one answers me; I call for help, but no one defends me.

He has blocked my way, and I have no escape; he has filled my path with darkness. He has stripped me of my honour and taken the crown from my head. He has demolished my walls, and I must depart; he has uprooted my hope like a tree.

His anger burns against me, and he considers me his enemy.

His troops come in force; they build their approaches against me and encamp around my tent.

My brothers keep away from me; my relatives treat me as a stranger. My neighbours and acquaintances abandon me, and the guests of my house forget me. My servant girls regard me as a stranger; I have become a foreigner in their eyes. I call my servant, but he does not answer me; I must even beg him.

My breath disgusts my wife, and my stench repels my own children. Even little children despise me and insult me as soon as I rise. My closest companions abhor me, and my dearest friends turn against me.

My bones cling to my skin; I have escaped by the skin of my teeth.

Have pity on me, have pity on me, my friends, for the hand of God has struck me!

Why do you persecute me as God does and never tire of mocking me?

If only my words were written down! If only they were engraved on bronze, inscribed for ever upon the rock with an iron chisel and lead!

“I know that my Avenger lives and that in the end he will rise upon the dust. After they have torn away my skin, even without flesh I shall see God. I myself shall see him, not as a stranger; my own eyes shall behold him.”

My heart faints within my breast!

And if you say, “How shall we persecute him?”—and thus seek the root of the problem in me—,

then fear the sword, for the sword punishes wrongdoing, and you will know that there is a judgement.”
