Description:

Eliphaz of Teman then spoke and said:

“Can a man be of use to God? Can a wise man be of use to him?

What does the Almighty gain from your being righteous, or what does he profit if your conduct is upright?

Does he reproach you because you are devout, or bring you to judgement for that?

Is it not rather because of your great wickedness and your countless sins?

Without cause you demanded pledges from your brother and stripped the naked of their clothing. You gave no water to the thirsty and denied bread to the hungry.

As a powerful man, master of the land and its privileged inhabitant, you sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.

That is why snares surround you, sudden terrors frighten you, darkness prevents you from seeing, and overflowing waters engulf you.

God is at the summit of heaven—see how high the stars are!

You say: ‘What does God know? Can he discern through the thick clouds? The clouds conceal everything from him and prevent him from seeing, while he walks upon the vault of heaven.’

Do you wish to follow the ancient path trodden by wicked mortals, swept away before their time when their foundations melted away like a river?

They said to God: ‘Keep away from us! What can the Almighty do to us?’

Yet he had filled their houses with good things, while the wicked made their plans without regard for him.

The righteous rejoiced when they saw it, and the innocent mocked them:

‘Their possessions have been destroyed; fire has devoured their prosperity!’

Reconcile yourself with him and be at peace, and good things will come to you. Accept the instruction of his mouth and keep his words in your heart.

If you return to the Almighty, he will restore you. Remove injustice from your tent; cast your gold into the dust and your gold of Ophir among the pebbles of the stream. Then the Almighty will be your gold and your abundance of silver. He will be your delight, and you will lift your face towards him. When you pray to him, he will hear you, and you will fulfil your vows. Whatever you decide will be accomplished, and light will shine upon your paths.

For he humbles the arrogant and saves those who humble themselves.

He will deliver the innocent, and you will be delivered through the purity of your hands.”
