Description:

My eyes have seen all this, my ears have heard it, and I understand it.

What you know, I also know, and I am no less than you.

But I want to address the Almighty; I wish to argue my case with God, while you whitewash everything with lies and are nothing but worthless physicians.

If only you would remain completely silent—that would truly be wisdom!

Please listen to my defence; pay attention to the arguments of my lips. Are you trying to defend God with lies and injustice?

Do you want to show partiality in his favour or make yourselves advocates for God?

What if he were to examine you? Would you try to deceive him as you would deceive a man?

If you secretly show partiality, he will surely expose you and prove you guilty.

Does his majesty not overwhelm you? Does his terror not crush you?

Your warnings are dusty proverbs, and your replies are made of clay.

Be silent, for now I will speak. Come what may, I will risk everything; I will stake my life. Even if he should try to kill me, I will wait for him, provided that I can defend myself in his presence. That alone would already be my salvation, for the godless cannot appear before him.

Listen carefully to my words; give ear to what I have to say. I have prepared my defence, and I know that I am innocent.

Does anyone wish to contend with me? For if I were to remain silent now, I would die.

Grant me, God, just these two things, and I will not hide from your presence: keep your hand far from me, and do not terrify me with your terror. Then accuse me, and I will answer you; or I will speak, and you will reply to me.

How many are my sins and my faults? Show me my offences and my sins.

Why do you hide your face and treat me as your enemy?

Why do you frighten a windblown leaf and pursue dry straw?

You record acts of rebellion against me; you charge me with the sins of my youth. You put my feet in the stocks, watch every step I take and examine my footprints.

So man wears away like an old wineskin, like a garment eaten by moths.
